Moja Arts Festival

Updated: Jan 11

A Celebration of African-American & Caribbean Arts

Moja, a Swahili term that translates to “One,” is the fitting name for this festival that celebrates unity among all individuals in our community. The event showcases the diverse contributions of African-American and Caribbean cultures to global and Western societies.

The MOJA Arts Festival is an annual tribute to Black arts and culture, emphasizing the significant artistic impact of African American and Caribbean traditions on the world.

This comprehensive festival is organized and overseen by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs in collaboration with the MOJA Planning Committee, a team of volunteers dedicated to community arts and culture.

Further support and direction are provided by the informal networks of the MOJA Advisory Board, comprising civic leaders who aid in fundraising and advocacy, as well as the Friends of MOJA patron circle, which includes individual and corporate donors.

Celebrating Arts, Community, Education

Festival activities encompass visual arts, music, cuisine, dance, poetry, theater, storytelling, traditional crafts, and family-oriented events. Aside from its diverse arts showcases, MOJA actively engages in educational initiatives, offering workshops in public schools and outreach programs for seniors in community centers.

The festival took place from September 26 to October 6, 2024.

On September 27, Reggae night was the highlight, featuring a performance by Ragga Lox and his band, who delivered a series of hit songs. Da’Gullah Rootz & Operation Irie, a local band, impressed the audience with their Roots Reggae segment, followed by Ibah Mar, who concluded the evening with a mesmerizing performance that left the crowd in awe.

The festival not only serves as a platform for showcasing artistic talents but also as a vital bridge connecting different cultures and communities. Through its rich program of events, MOJA brings together people from various backgrounds to appreciate and celebrate the vibrant heritage of African-American and Caribbean arts.

With its emphasis on unity and diversity, the MOJA Arts Festival stands out as a beacon of cultural celebration and inclusivity. By highlighting the artistic contributions of African-American and Caribbean cultures, the festival not only entertains but also educates and inspires attendees about the rich heritage and traditions of these communities.

Through a variety of activities such as visual arts exhibitions, musical performances, culinary showcases, and educational workshops, MOJA creates a multi-faceted experience that engages people of all ages and backgrounds. The festival's commitment to community outreach and cultural exchange fosters a sense of belonging and mutual understanding among participants.

Moreover, the collaborative efforts of the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs, the MOJA Planning Committee, the Advisory Board, and the Friends of MOJA patron circle underscore the strong support and dedication behind this cultural event. Their combined efforts ensure the festival's success and impact, enabling it to grow and evolve with each passing year.
